Historical Middlesex displays examined

New historical items considered

The Middlesex Historic Courthouse Committee (MHCC) met on Feb. 28 and agreed to propose a memorandum of understanding between the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (MCBS) and Middlesex County Museum and Historical Society in an effort to create a partnership to enhance the educational historical context of displays in the courthouse and on courthouse grounds.

The memorandum spells out the relationship where the museum will design, install and maintain exhibits, will request funding for the projects, but the BOS will have the “ultimate discretion to determine what is put on display in the courthouse and how long it shall be on display.”

The committee is also working on criteria for future hanging of portraits and displays. In the past, families and friends have recommended and requested to the county board of supervisors what portraits (usually local government officials but not always) should go on the walls. A portrait had to be approved by MCBS and the Middlesex County Circuit Court Judge. The portrait hanging ceremony had to be overseen by the judge…
