The presidential dual-party primary is set for Tuesday, March 5. This is a dual-party primary, which means the Democratic and Republican parties conduct their primaries on the same day.
“Unlike some other states, voters do not register to vote by party in Virginia,” said Melissa Welch, Middlesex director of elections and general registrar.
“In a dual-party primary, you just decide which party’s ballot you want and tell the election officer when you check in. You may indicate this out loud or by pointing to the appropriate sign.”
All qualified voters are eligible to participate in either the Democratic Party Primary or the Republican Party Primary, but they may only vote in one, Welch said.
Early voting
In-person early voting continues, Monday through Friday, with Saturday, March 2, being the last day to vote early. Elections office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; and Saturday, Feb. 24, and March 2, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The elections office is at 105 Bowden St. in Saluda.
As an alternative to in-person early and Election Day voting, voters may vote by mail, with no excuse required. The voter should simply fill out an application to request a mailed ballot at www.elections.virginia.gov. The deadline to apply for a ballot to be mailed to you has passed — it was Friday, Feb. 23, by 5 p.m.
