County seeks ways to decrease Wake dredging

Lord help us!

It just might take His help alone to eliminate the need for maintenance dredging of Mill Creek boat landing in Wake.

On Feb. 6, the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors tabled action on whether or not the county should continue maintenance dredging at the landing one to two times a year or take on an approximately $900,000 plan that reportedly could cut maintenance dredging at the boat ramp to four to six years.

The Mill Creek public landing used to be a sustainable site by dredging it every 10 years or so, but weather and storm patterns have changed, she said. The sand is coming from far away from the north and is being pushed to the site by change in storm patterns.

Smith said that owners of the landing, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), do not have the means or the will to fix the problem at Mill Creek. “It is totally up to the county,” he said.

Supervisors voted to table the matter and revisit the Mill Creek options at their March 5 regular board meeting.
