Deaconess Mary Eunice Ackes was born Feb. 20, 1932 to the late Charlie and Mary Hodges Burrell in Jamaica, Va. She was the ninth child of 12 siblings. At age 6, she was raised by her foster parents, the late Deacon Robert Frank and Martha Ann Meggs of Saluda. Mary Eunice transitioned to glory on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph R. Ackes Sr.; two sons, Howard Ackes and Joseph Ackes Jr.; four sisters, Adal Lee, Sarah, Clara and Elizabeth; seven brothers, Delvin, Herman, Roger, Linwood, William, Joseph and Chris.
She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Mary Hayes (Ronald) and Wanda Williams (Reginald); two sons, Amos Ackes (Sharon) and Gilbert Ackes (Laverne); 10 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was conducted Friday, Jan. 19 at Lebanon Baptist Church, Saluda. Interment was in the Zion Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, Saluda.
