Chargers basketball team defeats two Tidewater opponents, corrals Seahorses to retain bragging rights

The Middlesex High School (MHS) varsity basketball team (11-4, 8-2) had two Tidewater District wins last week beating King & Queen (K&Q) Central, 78-41, on Tuesday, Jan. 23 and Mathews, 83-46, on Friday, Jan. 26.

The Chargers also had a 57-45 non-conference, county bragging rights win over the Christchurch Seahorses on Saturday, Jan. 27.

Against the K&Q Royal Tigers, the Chargers were paced by guards Ichi Layne and Cameron Lambert, who scored 16 and 15 points respectively. Lambert had one of his best offensive games of the year, knocking down two long range 3-pointers in the first quarter.

Dylan Akers came off the bench to score 10 points to help MHS get the win. Davonte Griffin and Nathan Powell scored 8 points each; K.J. Burrell, 6 points; Shane Glenn and JaQuan Griffin, 5 points each; Henry Fleet, 3; and Jonathan Oliver, 2 points.

This week’s action

The Chargers traveled to Charles City, Tuesday, Jan. 30, to take on the Charles City Panthers. Results were unavailable at press time.

Middlesex will travel to West Point to take on the Pointers on Friday, Feb. 2. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. At 6:15 p.m., the junior varsity game precedes the varsity game.
