County won’t directly join legal battle on water rates

Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (MCBS) voted, 4-0, on Friday, Jan. 19, to write a “letter of objection” to a State Corporation Commission (SCC) application for higher water rates by Aqua Virginia Inc. (Aqua).

The board opted not to join a coalition of counties and to pool funds to hire legal and professional experts to go before the SCC to fight Aqua’s water rate increase application.

Pinetop supervisor Randy Crittenden said that Aqua’s rate hike will bring the water rates close to what Middlesex Water Authority (MWA) customers are already paying. “Why are we going to pay thousands of dollars (for professional assistance) to fight to keep rates lower than what the people (on MWA water) are currently paying?”

A request for Middlesex County to pool resources and to join the coalition of counties came from former Middlesex County Administrator Charlie Culley, who is now county administrator of Caroline County.
