Water rates may jump up to 40%

Middlesex Supervisors tabled action Wednesday, Jan. 3, on joining other counties in challenging a State Corporation Commission (SCC) application for higher water rates by Aqua Virginia Inc.

The water company has filed a rate increase application with the SCC that could have Aqua Middlesex water customers paying as much as a 40% increase.

Aqua provides drinking water in the county to the village of Saluda and areas of Cedar Point and Kilmer’s Point, and subdivisions located a few miles west of the Town of Urbanna.

The request for Middlesex County’s support came from former Middlesex County administrator Charlie Culley, who is now county administrator of Caroline County.

“The frequent rate increases have placed a significant burden on the citizens of Caroline County that receive water… from Aqua,” he wrote. “County staff was directed to contact other localities with large numbers of citizens served by Aqua to determine if there is a willingness to join together and pool resources in opposing the rate increases before the SCC.”

Walker said that he has received some information from Cedar Point customers who have been informed by Aqua their water rate increase could be as high as 33.8%, which is considerable considering the SCC approved an Aqua 10% rate increase in 2021, he informed the board.

Supervisors are expected to revisit this issue at the board’s February meeting.
