MC registrar shares voting schedule

This year will be a “super busy election cycle,” said Melissa D. Welch, Middlesex County’s director of Elections and General Registrar.

On Nov. 5, there will be presidential, general, and special elections, including:

  • President
  • Vice president
  • U.S. Senate
  • U.S. House
  • Three seats on the Urbanna Town Council
  • A special election to choose a Middlesex Board of Supervisors representative for the Hartfield District to fill the term ending Dec. 31, 2025

In addition, there will be a Presidential Dual-Party Primary on March 5, and political party primaries on June 18.

Dual-party primary

Early voting begins Friday, Jan. 19, and will continue, Monday through Friday, with Saturday, March 2, being the last day to vote early. Elections Office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; and Saturdays, Feb. 24, and March 2, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Feb. 12 is the deadline to register to vote or update an existing registration for the March primaries. On Monday, Feb. 12, and Friday, Feb. 23, the Elections Office will remain open until 5 p.m. The office will be closed Presidents Day, Feb. 19. The holiday was created to honor both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

As an alternative to in-person early and Election Day voting, voters may vote by mail, with no excuse required. The voter should simply fill out an application to request a mailed ballot at elections.virginia.gov. The deadline to apply for a ballot to be mailed to you is Feb. 24 by 5 p.m.

Candidate packets are ready for pick up at the Election’s Office at 105 Bowden St. in Saluda, said Welch.

Urbanna Town Council will have three seats on the ballot for a four-year term.

A special election will be held to fill the vacancy for the remaining portion of the term for the board of supervisors for the Hartfield District due to the resignation of John B. Koontz Jr. The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors appointed William (Bill) Harris to serve until the voters of Middlesex County fill the vacancy. The winner of the Hartfield District special election may take office once the Middlesex Electoral Board certifies the special election results, which normally happens on Nov. 8. Once the election is certified the new member will be sworn in, Welch said.
