John Melvin Ward Jr. is Turner series season’s first presenter

This Sunday, Jan. 21, will mark the beginning of Deltaville Maritime Museum’s (DMM) fourth Turner Lecture Series. The lecture starts at 2 p.m.

Begun in 2019 as pre-season events guided by then-President Richard Rodgers in January, February and March, these three lectures, presented in the heated DMM events pavilion, have become a mainstay of the Deltaville Maritime Museum’s offseason.

Our opening lecture is “From Bay Boats to Tug Boats,” by Captain John Melvin Ward Jr. The Ward family has been instrumental as part of Middlesex County and Deltaville’s Chesapeake Bay history. There will be refreshments and a “Q and A” after the lecture.

The other two lectures in 2024 are:

  • 2 p.m. Feb. 4 — Leonard Powell, “Big Captain, Little Captain: The Satisfying Life of a Waterman through the Eyes of His Son.”
  • 2 p.m. March 17 — Betsy Washington, “The Wonder of Native Plants.”
