Supervisors look for ways to revamp old building

The old elementary school building has sat unused for two decades

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (MCBS) is creating a committee to determine the future of the old Rappahannock Central Elementary (RCE) School Kidd building at Cooks Corner.

The Kidd building was abandoned by the county when Middlesex Elementary School (MES) at Locust Hill opened in fall 2002. The building included the cafeteria/auditorium for the old RCE school campus. Most of the classroom portion of the campus has been torn down.

Several years ago, the board appropriated $320,000 to put a new roof on the RCE Kidd building. That never transpired. In November 2023, the board agreed to take a portion of those funds and build a recreational outside combination basketball and pickleball court on what was old RCE property.

Assistant Middlesex County Administrator AnnMarie Ricardi recommended on Wednesday, Jan. 3, that the board create an RCE Restoration Committee to develop a plan for renovating and for the future use of the facility…
