“It’s done.” With these words Barbara Hartley summed up four years of planning and work that led to the Town of Urbanna building a new pool. Hartley, who served as chairman of the pool committee most recently, gave this brief report at the town council’s Dec. 14 meeting.
Town Councilor Sandra Sturgill reported that $203,500 has been raised through charter memberships, donations and pledges as of Dec. 14.
The town borrowed $500,000 from the Taber Fund, and received $237,000 in federal funds for COVID-19 recovery, giving a total $737,000 in town funds for the pool. Added to this is $203,500 that Sturgill reported, giving a total of $940,500 as of Dec. 14. The pool cost will be $1.2 million, said Mayor Bill Goldsmith. This leaves a balance of $259,500 to be raised. Goldsmith said at an earlier council meeting the town will not need to borrow money for the pool.
