John Wilson Dunston

John Wilson Dunston, 99, of Deltaville, went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2023.

He was a member of Urbanna United Methodist Church.

John worked for 31 years as a communication technician at Newport News Shipbuilding and retired from there in 1989.

John was born in 1924 and grew up during the Great Depression, living through many challenging times. John put his faith in Jesus Christ and was a devoted son to his parents and husband to his wife. From meager means, John helped many people throughout his life. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, bluegrass music, riding with Charles Perkinson in his buggy around the community and spending time with his best friend Donnie Hatchett. In 2001, Donnie and Judy Hatchett purchased a home directly across the street from John. They became the best of friends and over the years John came to think of Donnie as the son he never had. John was also very fond of his wife’s nephew and wife, Rupert and Midge Burrus. Midge and Rupert were especially kind and thoughtful to John after Alice passed away in 2015.

John is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Alice Harrow Dunston; his father, William Henry Dunston; and mother, Lucy Chandler Dunston.

He is survived by his great-nephew, Edward Chandler Alderman and his wife Mary Jane of Williamsburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family thanked Riverside Home Healthcare for the care extended to John after his wife passed away in 2015. Amber Jackson was an amazing nurse who frequently came to visit John and helped him with life’s ailments. The family also thanked Gloucester House and Riverside Hospice for John’s care over the last couple of months. Megan, Emily, Taylor and Amanda with Riverside Hospice were angels at John’s side. John was blessed to have such amazing hospice care.

The graveside service is planned for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3 at Zoar Baptist Church Cemetery, Deltaville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Zoar Baptist Church, 17097 General Puller Hwy., Deltaville, VA 23043. Faulkner Funeral Homes, Bristow-Faulkner Chapel, Saluda, is assisting the family with arrangements.
