The Middlesex High School (MHS) varsity boys basketball team split last week in two conference games, defeating the King & Queen (K&Q) Central Royal Tigers, 85-39, on Friday, Dec. 15, and losing to Carver, 74-47, on Tuesday, Dec. 12.
There was never any doubt that playing against K&Q the Chargers were the better team. Middlesex won every quarter and dominated the game with a strong run and gun offense and a smothering defense.
MHS was paced by point guard Itchi Layne and center Malik Dandy, who scored 19 and 18 points, respectively. JaQuan and Davonte Griffin also scored in double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Others to score were Nathan Powell with 6 points; Amir Lewis and Jonathan Oliver, 4 points each; Henry Fleet, 3 points; K.J. Burrell and Cameron Lambert, 2 points each; and Shane Glenn, 1 point.
Against Carver, Layne provided most of the Charger’s offense with 23 points. MHS’s other offense threat Dandy was unavailable to play. Others to score were Lewis and J. Griffin, 7 points each; D. Griffin, 6 points; Glenn, 3 points; and Lambert, 1 point.
The Chargers were scheduled to take on the Lancaster Red Devils last week, but that game was postponed. Middlesex played Rappahannock on Tuesday, Dec. 19, and traveled to Lancaster to take on the Red Devils on Wednesday, Dec. 20. Results were unavailable at press time. The Chargers will take a break from action for the Christmas holidays. Â
