Supervisors vote to abandon Stormont Road over dam

Middlesex County Board of Supervisors voted, 3-1, to recommend to VDOT to abandon a portion of Stormont Road (Route 629) over Healy’s Millpond dam.

The vote had Jamaica District Supervisor Wayne Jessie, Harmony Village Supervisor Reggie Williams and Pinetop District Supervisor Lud Kimbrough voting to abandon, while Saluda District board member Don Harris voted no on the issue. The Hartfield District supervisor seat is currently vacant.

The road was closed in 2006 when the spillway box culvert to the dam failed a six-month VDOT inspection. Recently, the dam spillway failed an inspection, which has resulted in required lower drainage levels on the two ponds on the property. Homeowners and others have studied the possibility of fixing it, but cannot afford the cost. This means that the road had to either be “discontinued” or “abandoned.”
