Bruce Nelson died of cancer in December 2022 and left behind a lasting legacy of kindness, a hard work ethic and an understanding of the importance of giving back to the community.

Before he died he reminded his daughter Victoria Belcher and son-in-law Andy that Victoria and Bruce had coached in the Middlesex Little League softball program.

“So about two years ago my dad mentioned that he thought Andy should sponsor a baseball team and then at the end of last year’s Bam-Bam and Pebbles season he said it to me again,” said Victoria. “We decided this year to sponsor a team in his honor and in his memory.”

The Belchers agreed to sponsor the team Short Circuits in the 2-to 5-year-old Middlesex County Parks and Recreation Bam-Bam and Pebbles baseball league.

“I wish Dad was right here to enjoy watching but I know he is watching and smiling from above,”

Bruce coached in the Middlesex County Little League girls softball league for four years and was scoutmaster of Middlesex County’s Troop 341 for three years. He worked for 25 years for the Saluda Residency Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) maintenance shop where in 2007 he was awarded the National Technician of the Year Award by the Association of Equipment Management Professionals.

The MCPR Bam-Bam and Pebbles league finished off its season last weekend with its annual trophy presentation on Sept. 30 and a make up game on Oct. 1 at the Middlesex County Sports Complex in Locust Hill.
