With a 9-1 record, the 2023 Middlesex High School golf team is champion of the Tidewater District.
The Chargers only loss this season was to Lancaster (8-1), whose only loss was to AAA New Kent.
Middlesex and Lancaster will be top seeds in the Region 1A Tournament on Oct. 3 at the Golden Eagle Golf Course in Lancaster. The top two Regional Tournament finishers go to the State Tournament, which would be a return trip for Middlesex. Last year Middlesex tied with George Wythe High School for second place in the Virginia Class 1 state championship. Lancaster was fourth “at states.”
Four Chargers that went to states in 2022 are on the team this year — senior Hudson McMinn, and juniors Nielson McMinn, Abel Crader, and Cole Glasco.
Regular season
Middlesex defeated Northumberland and Essex in the final games of the regular season last week.
“The guys are starting to look more relaxed on the course and that’s most likely due to being so successful as a team this season and feeling more confident in their abilities,” said Charger Coach David Lutz. “We have had a good mix of making sure everyone takes practice seriously while also having fun which makes it a little more relaxing for the guys I think.”
