Cross country teams from Middlesex, Essex, King William, Rappahannock and West Point had a chance to participate in the inaugural meet last week at the new course behind St. Clare Walker (SCW) Middle School in Locust Hill. The 5K (3.1 mile) course, which winds past picturesque areas of the SCW campus, nearby patches of soybeans and several soccer fields, replaces the course the Chargers had been using as their home course. Work on the new course was spearheaded by Middlesex High School (MHS) Head Cross Country Coach Jennifer Harrow, who as of this year is overseeing both the MHS girls and boys cross country programs. The old MHS course was on the campus of Rappahannock Community College in Glenns.

An earlier meet on the new course had been scheduled for Sept. 6, but was canceled due to the intense heat that day. Middlesex will host another meet at SCW on Oct. 18.

At the Sept. 20 meet, Gunnar Marston led the way for the Charger boy runners, finishing in fifth place with a 19 minute, 40 second time. “Gunnar kept pace with the top runners going into the second mile,” Coach Harrow said.

Makayla Moore led the way for the MHS girls at the Sept. 20 meet, finishing sixth with a 25 minute, 7 second time. “With only four competing, they competed as individuals. Makayla has a strong start to the season,” Coach Harrow said of the Charger girl runners.

King William captured first place for the boys at the meet, with West Point placing second, Middlesex placing third, and Rappahannock placing fourth. Essex did not have enough members to run as a team.
