Deltaville’s Broad Creek needs to be dredged as soon as possible and the wheels are turning to make it happen.
That was the message chairman of the board Lud Kimbrough brought to the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors (MCBS) on Tuesday, July 11.
Kimbrough reported that recently the county and Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission (MPPDC) officials met with the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Aid to Navigation and Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) officials to “address the emergency dredging needs in Broad Creek,” he said.
“We are seeing boats running aground regularly between day markers two and three on the creek,” said Kimbrough. “The USCG will use its notice right to mariners to notify vessels to stay mid-channel due to shoaling near the day markers and will post links to the most recent survey graphic to aid mariner’s understanding of where shoaling is an issue.”
The MCBS chairman said that ACOE has accelerated the Broad Creek survey schedule and will commence surveying both Jackson and Broad creeks for shoal locations (hot spots) on Sept. 29. The process should take a couple of weeks to get survey results.
MPPDC will continue seeking future major grant funding for the major dredging of the Broad Creek approach and also interior channels of approach to major marina facilities. This process will likely take two years to yield results…
