Boaters, be sure to use life jackets on your pets

by Cate Ogden – Middlesex Pet Friends –

Can you believe it’s September already? So where is the autumn-like weather? This unusually hot summer has kept many boaters off the water, but with the promise of fall there are more boats out cruising our beautiful rivers and the Chesapeake Bay.

Many boaters, both sailors and power-boaters, cruise with their pets. A sailor was spotted recently with both a dog and a cat on board and both dog and cat were wearing lifejackets! What a wonderful sight.

The importance of life jackets while out on the water is well known and even required by law for people, but the cruising animals are often overlooked. Their safety should always be kept in mind. While most may be able to swim, they too can drown depending on the circumstances. So, if it’s not a bird, amphibian or fish check into getting a life jacket for your pet.

If you are looking for a pet the Middlesex County Animal Shelter has an overabundance of very nice dogs right now: all sizes, all breeds and all looking for their forever home. Middlesex Pet Friends for Life (MPFL) helps to advertise these wonderful dogs on Petfinder, and we try to bring them to each Holly Point (Deltaville) Market held on the fourth Saturday of the month from May to December.

Right now, the shelter has a lovely English Pointer, Stanley, 2, up to date on all vaccines, housetrained and neutered. Lucy and Stormy are two adorable Beagles. Joey is a great all-American dog with a heart of gold. Of course, they have puppies too.

There really are too many to list but if you are looking for that special new BFF, please call Ruth at 804-695-7772. She’ll be happy to introduce you and have a meet and greet…
