The Middlesex County Public Library (MCPL) system will host “Native Pollinator Gardens,” a presentation by the Middle Peninsula Chapter of Virginia Master Naturalists. The talk is set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at the MCPL’s Deltaville branch at 35 Lovers Lane. Coffee and refreshments will be served.
Visitors to the Deltaville branch may have noticed that the hedges by the front window have been replaced by a bustling variety of plants, vines, and flowers. This is a native pollinator garden, designed to promote species native to the area. This in turn encourages the growth of pollinators like butterflies, bees, and a host of other creatures with numbers in decline. Some visitors have even noted recurring visits from a hummingbird.
Presenters Luann Johnson and Pat Anderson, both members of the Middle Peninsula Chapter of Virginia Master Naturalists, will address planning and considerations in planting such gardens. “We will be discussing the importance of planting native plants,” Johnson said, as well as “creating supportive environments for our native pollinators, and identifying concerns about invasive species.” They will also explore resources for gardeners and the identification of plants.
“Local Pollinator Gardens” will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Deltaville library. Also, the opening reception for the Deltaville library’s latest art show, “H20: the Element of Water” is set for 4-6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1. Everyone is welcome.
