Blaze destroys home on Swan View Drive

A raging fire consumes a Swan View Drive home near Urbanna in the pre-dawn hours Sunday. A father and son who lived there were inside when the blaze broke out, but got out in time to save their lives — but not any of their possessions. (Photo by Debbie Bannister)

Fire destroyed a father and son’s home Sunday at 117 Swan View Drive off Gayles Road, five miles west of Urbanna. When fire departments arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames, but the father and son had escaped.

The pair was in the dwelling when the father was awakened early in the morning Sunday by the smell of smoke, said Middlesex County Volunteer Fire (Urbanna) Department (MCVFD) Chief Ray Burch.

“The father said he saw fire coming from a sofa in the living room, which forced them to leave the house and call the fire department,” said Burch. “We got the call at 5:42 a.m. Sunday morning and when we arrived the house was totally engulfed. The house and all of its contents were lost.” The house is owned by Dillan Powell.

“We do not know how the fire started, but it is not under suspicion,” said Burch. “It is unfortunate but fortunately the two people inside got out alive.”

Along with the Urbanna Fire Department, Hartfield Volunteer Fire Department and the Upper Middlesex County (Water View) Volunteer Fire Department all responded to the fire.

The Middlesex County Volunteer Rescue Squad (Urbanna Branch) also responded to the scene.
