Authorities unsuccessful in trying to stop Deltaville suicide

Law enforcement personnel converged on the Deltaville Maritime Museum-Holly Point Nature Park grounds on Sunday evening, Aug. 20, following reports of a missing man who was possibly suicidal, reported Major M.E. Sampson of the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO).

According to Maj. Sampson, the man’s wife had called the MCSO about 7 p.m. and reported him missing and that he had been under a lot of stress.

The couple were Deltaville residents. He was in the U.S. Army stationed at Ft. Eustis.

About 7:30 p.m. the MCSO got a text from the missing man’s command staff that he was at the Deltaville Maritime Museum. When deputies arrived they found the man pointing a gun to his head.

Deputies and Army personnel talked to the subject attempting to deescalate the situation for several hours. The MCSO hostage negotiation team was contacted and sent to the scene to assist.

All attempts at negotiation were unsuccessful in stopping the man from taking his life about 12:48 a.m. on Aug. 21.

The body was sent to the State Medical Examiner for an autopsy.
