Middlesex County school employees had hoped for a 7% raise this year but the state legislature opted not to vote on an amendment that would have made it happen.
The state budget is voted on every biennium so it has to be approved every two years. The year 2023 is in the second year of the biennium.
The amendment for another 2% was introduced in the legislature but was not voted on by the House of Delegates by June 30 as required by law. When the current budget was voted on in 2022 it called for a 10% raise, 5% for the first year of the biennium and 5% the next year.
At the Aug. 1 Middlesex County Board of Supervisors meeting, MCPS Superintendent Dr. Tracy Seitz informed supervisors that since the full General Assembly did not approve the 7% amendment by June 30 school personnel will be receiving 5% raises this year instead of the proposed 7%.
