Helen Montague Foster of Topping, a retired physician and poet with lifelong connections to Middlesex County, reports that her debut World War II novel, “The Silent Hen,” already available in paperback for purchase online, will be released in hardcover and e-editions on Aug. 8 by Atmosphere Press.
Her parents, Ed and Nancy Prichard, met and married in Cairo, Egypt, while serving with the OSS, the WWII forerunner of the CIA. Both were good at keeping secrets, which served to pique their children’s curiosity and interest in international affairs. Her father’s autobiography and the few stories from her mother which contradicted her claim to have been “just a secretary” inspired research for this work of fiction. This dual timeline novel is set both in 1943-1944 and in 2001 immediately after the 9-11 attacks, and the latter stirs up reconsideration of the characters’ work in intelligence and wartime relationships.
