The Middlesex County Volunteer Rescue Squad (MCVRS) is presenting the inaugural Rescue Regatta fundraiser on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 18 and 19, in Deltaville.

The regatta will feature a pursuit-style race on Saturday. This is a race for money, not class racing. The purpose of the “pursuit starting system” is to apply the corrections of the slower boats at the start of a race, by staggering the faster boats towards the end.

The squad is seeking financial and in-kind support for the event that will be overseen by Fishing Bay Yacht Club (FBYC). Longtime FBYC sailor Mike Karn is organizing the race portion of the event and FBYC is providing its website for the regatta.

“Since 1956, the Middlesex County Volunteer Rescue Squad has had the privilege of providing lifesaving medical care to those most in need,” said MCVRS President Lynn White. “But post-pandemic — a time when health concerns seem to be on the rise, and volunteerism at its lowest — we strain to continue as a volunteer organization. Now we seek new venues to raise much needed funds to stay strong for the community.

The event is a fundraiser but is also being offered to encourage volunteers to join the rescue squad. Organizer and MCVRS member Tina Mennett said that many who have volunteered for years in the rescue squad and the squad’s auxiliary are aging out and there are few coming behind them to fill the void.
