Wheeler to step down as Urbanna administrator

Garth Wheeler

Urbanna’s town administrator since 2020, Garth Wheeler, is stepping down from the position effective Aug. 5.

At the July 13 town council meeting, Mayor Bill Goldsmith read aloud Wheeler’s short letter of resignation dated July 5.

Wheeler wrote, “I have enjoyed my tenure with the town and I appreciate the opportunity to serve the community.”

Mayor Goldsmith commented, telling Wheeler, “We thank you for your service. You’re going to be missed, you’ve done a really great job over the last couple of years to put things into shape as we move forward. You’re going to be hard to replace. I’m sorry to see you go.”

Council voted 5-1 to accept Wheeler’s resignation. Councilor Marjorie Austin cast the only vote against accepting Wheeler’s resignation. Voting in favor were councilors Sandy Sturgill, Merri Hanson, Alana Courtney, and Beth Justice. Mayor Goldsmith also voted to accept Wheeler’s resignation. Councilor Larry Chowning was absent.

Council went into a brief closed session for the discussion or consideration of hiring a town administrator. No action was taken.
