Richmonder Evan Leach (No. 488), 23, rockets his way down General Puller Highway moments after the start Saturday of the 12th Deltaville 5K. He went on to win, setting a course record. No. 406, Jordan Bendura, last year’s winner, and this year’s runner-up, runs at Leach’s side. The University of Richmond cross country teammates dueled for the lead throughout the race. Collins top female — ran tethered to labradoodle

Evan Leach, 23, of Richmond won the 12th Deltaville 5K Saturday, setting a course record with his time of 15 minutes, 29 seconds. His time is 35 seconds faster than the record set last year by Leach’s University of Richmond cross country teammate Jordan Bendura, who finished second this year. “It was a lot of fun — it was a blast to run,” Leach said following the race. “The course is fantastic.” It was the Richmond Spider’s first year running in the race.

Riley Collins, 21, of Charlottesville was the top female finisher with a 23:27 time. Collins ran the race tethered to her Australian labradoodle, Rudder. Sarah Sanders, age and town unavailable, was the female runner-up and had a 23:49 time.

Errett Moore, 10, of Deltaville won the Kids Fun Run that took place right before the Deltaville 5K. Ella Norris, 10, of Deltaville was the top girl finisher in the Kids Fun Run.

“This year was a great success,” said Lud Kimbrough, the assistant race director. “The event had 380 5K registrations and 31 Fun Run registrations for 411 total.” Three-hundred-and-seventy-six people total actually competed (not all who register actually compete).
