Virginia has a projected $3 billion surplus, Virginia Del. Keith Hodges, R-Urbanna, told the Urbanna Town Council at its June 22 meeting.
The delegates have taken a conservative approach with the budget during the COVID-19 pandemic due to concerns of a recession that would follow, said Hodges. “We try to put money into one-time expenses pay-as-you-go without borrowing any money because of course we don’t know if there’s going to be an economic downturn.”
Hodges serves as chairman of the Counties, Cities and Towns Committee and his top priority is not approving unfunded mandates, which pass the cost on to localities.
Healthcare
Hodges said there is a shortage of employees in education, law enforcement and health care.
Health care is the largest private employer in the Middle Peninsula and there is a “health care workforce crisis.”
