Urbanna, Deltaville to offer big fireworks displays for Independence Day

by Tom Chillemi and Don Richeson –

Middlesex County will offer two big community fireworks displays this year on different evenings in the days leading up to Independence Day — Urbanna will continue its annual fireworks display and Deltaville is restarting offering a fireworks display after an 11-year hiatus.

Urbanna’s Independence Day-themed celebration is set for Friday, June 30, at the Urbanna Town Marina on Urbanna Creek. In addition to the fireworks, there will be a boat parade, music and food. There is no rain date. The activities begin at the marina at 5 p.m. The marina is at 210 Oyster Road in Urbanna.

  • Music will be provided by Kevin Gentry and disc jockey Wayne Jessie.
  • Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department volunteers will serve food.
  • The annual boat parade begins with participants gathering at the Beryl R. Newman Memorial Bridge (nicknamed “Urbanna bridge”) at 6:30 p.m. They will then parade past the marina at 7 p.m.

Applications for the boat parade are available at the town office and town marina.
For information, call the town marina at 804-758-5440 or the town office at 804-758-2613.

  • Fireworks will fill the sky shortly after dusk around 9 p.m. to conclude this hometown celebration of America’s 247th birthday. Fare-free “Pearl,” Urbanna’s trolley-style mini bus, will run until 10 p.m.

Starting at 5 p.m. on June 30, Virginia Street will be closed to vehicles from Cross Street to the town marina.

Deltaville fireworks

Deltaville will offer a community fireworks display this year. The display is tentatively set for around 9:15 p.m. Saturday, July 1, at Deltaville Ballpark. It will follow the 6 p.m. Deltaville Deltas versus Chesapeake Sharks baseball game at the ballpark, which is at 100 Ballpark Road in Deltaville.

“The fireworks will be shot from the outfield of Deltaville Ballpark, and viewable from all around the ballpark and Deltaville Community Association (DCA) park area,” said Stephen Blue, one of the event’s organizers. “Those who attend the game will have the opportunity to move from the grandstands to the infield and watch the fireworks from up close.”

Blue added, “The DCA is still raising funds to support the fireworks, and to ensure this will be a multi-year event.”

Donations to offset the cost of the fireworks can be made at Hurd’s True Value Hardware store in Deltaville. A GoFundMe page has also been set up, or you can mail a check to the Deltaville Community Association (DCA) at P.O. Box 211, Deltaville, VA 23043 with “Fireworks” in the memo. The DCA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and all donations are tax deductible.
