Middlesex receives $800,000 check during Sen. Warner’s Syringa stop

Many Internet “deserts” in Middlesex County will be getting broadband service. The majority of the work should be completed in the first quarter of 2024, said Kevin Gentry, executive director of the Middlesex County Broadband Authority (MBA). Gentry is also employed by Middlesex County as its director of information technology.

Once completed, the network will serve approximately 970 homes and businesses with high speed Internet. This $10 million project is being funded with contributions from All Points Broadband, Dominion Energy, Middlesex County, and the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). On Sunday, June 11, U.S. Senator Mark Warner, D-Va., visited the Freeshade Community Center in Syringa to present an $800,000 check from the ARPA to the MBA.

Grants

A Virginia Telecommunication Initiative grant through the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development is providing $2,050,000 in funding. All Points Broadband and Dominion Energy will contribute $6,503,887. Another $800,000 is coming from the American Rescue Plan Act. The county’s cost will be  $1.15 million, coming from the Capital Improvements Plan budget and was approved by the board of supervisors in September 2021.

Part of the Dominion Energy contribution will be “in-kind” service to run the lines.
