The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and states of Virginia and Maryland are working to encourage the growth of oysters on the Chesapeake Bay to enhance the  environmental and economic significance of the bay’s oysters.

The Virginia public oyster grounds off Punchbowl Bar are some of the most fertile in Virginia waters. The layers of shell on the bottom being created provides a clutch designed to encourage oyster larvae to attach to and grow. It also provides habitat for other marine life.
