Mary Louise Wilkes “Lulu” Rosypal, 77, of Richmond, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 12, 2023 with her daughters by her side.
Lulu was the daughter of the late Aubrey and Ruth Marshall Wilkes. Her loving husband of 44 years, Walter Rosypal, and her sister, Mildred Shackleford (Stanley), preceded her in death.
She is survived by her daughters, Manya Saunders (Scott) and Alexa von Dohlen (Joe); her three grandsons, Charles, Alexander and Hunter Saunders; and her beloved dog, Windsor.
Lulu graduated from Middlesex High School and received an associate degree from Chowan College. She attended Richmond Polytechnic Institute and earned her medical technologist certification at Lynchburg General Hospital. She went on to work in the laboratory at St. Mary’s Hospital for more than 40 years.
Lulu was an original in every sense of the word. She was a true southern belle born about 150 years too late. Growing up in Urbanna, she developed a love of small-town living by the water. Inspired by her charming, riverside surroundings, Lulu cultivated an appreciation for all types of beauty, including close-knit friendships. She was a connoisseur of Victorian antiques, classic Austin-Healey sports cars, exquisite flowers, and dazzling, enormous Christmas trees. Lulu had a passion for Newfoundland dogs, who, along with her three grandsons, were the joy of her life. She will be remembered for her sassy wit, sparkling blue eyes and bright smile.
The family thank the staff at Sunrise Assisted Living for their compassion and care during these last few months.
A funeral service is planned for 2 p.m. Friday, June 23, at Centenary United Methodist Church, 411 E. Grace St., Richmond.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church or the Richmond SPCA.
