MHS’s Maddie Green is state Runner-Up

Standout Charger girl falls in VHSL
state tennis singles final at Va. Tech

Madison “Maddie” Green

Prior to playing in Saturday’s Virginia High School League (VHSL) Class 1 girls tennis singles state championship, Middlesex High School’s Madison “Maddie” Green played in the state semifinal round on June 9 versus the Region D champion, Alexa Olinger, from Eastside. Green won that match 6-1, 6-0, sending her to the championship round.

In the final round on June 10, Green played George Wythe High School’s Maggie Minton, last year’s state champion. Green put up a tough fight, but it wasn’t enough to win the match, which Green lost 0-6, 1-6.

Green was awarded the runner-up title for Class 1 girls tennis players for all of Virginia. By advancing to the state final, Green improved on her strong performance from last year — in 2022 she fell in the state semifinals — ironically, to the same player who ended her season this year, Minton, and by the same score.

Virginia Tech in Blacksburg hosted the state tournament at its Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

As a team, the Charger girls finished 5-2-0 this year, according to the VHSL website.
MHS Coach Matthew Short is expected to have summer and fall tennis practice days for those interested. Students should contact Coach Short through his school email address, mshort@mcps.k12.va.us, for details.
