
The Middlesex High School (MHS) varsity baseball team (16-8) qualified to compete in the State Class 1 baseball tournament last week after the Chargers finished second in Region A tournament. The top two winning teams automatically play in the state tournament.
MHS played Riverheads High School in the first round of the state tournament on Tuesday, June 6, at Riverheads, which is near Staunton.
The Chargers beat Chincoteague, 13-1, in the quarterfinals of the Region A tournament and then beat the Rappahannock Raiders 2-1 in the semifinals. Against Rappahannock, Kaden Hunley pitched four innings and allowed five hits. Patrick Larson pitched three innings allowed one hit and had seven strikeouts.

On offense against the Raiders, Hunley, Trey Fitchett and P. Larson had two hits apiece. Simon Larson and Jackson Murray had one hit and an RBI each.
In the loss to Lancaster, Christopher Withers pitched 5.2 innings, allowed three hits and had three strikeouts. Fitchett finished the game on the mound and allowed no hits and struck out two batters.
Hunley paced the offense with three hits and he drove in the only run that the Chargers scored. Murray and Cameron Byers each contributed a hit in the MHS loss.
