Middlesex County Museum fundraiser at 1700s Hardyville estate a success

Dozens pack a Rappahannock Community College tent May 21 at Hardyville’s historic Providence estate to hear an intriguing historical talk by the Rev. Dr. Robert W. Prichard. The talk was part of a fundraiser for the Middlesex County Museum and Historical Society. (Contributed)

The Middlesex County Museum and Historical Society conducted its spring fundraiser, “An Afternoon at Providence,” May 21 on the grounds of the historic Providence estate nestled along the Piankatank River near Hardyville. Providence owners, Cean and Bill Cawthorn, graciously hosted the event and gave an overview of the historical house and opened it to the visitors to tour. Rappahannock Community College graciously shared a tent, tables and chairs to provide comfort and shade for the educational afternoon.

Adding to the stunning river vistas, the 1768 replica sloop Luna was tied up at the dock on the Piankatank for tours. Visitors learned about the early vessels that supplied colonists with essential goods. The extended Collamore family was all dressed in costume too and provided educational insight into river trading.
