Honoring fallen soldiers in a big way in Hartfield

Every Memorial Day weekend, the Middlesex County Rotary Club aims to honor in a big way service members who died for their country — the club displays 150 American flags near the intersection of General Puller Highway and Twiggs Ferry Road in Hartfield.

One of the flags (left) creates an interesting pattern as it waves in the afternoon breeze.

Mathews resident Nancie Roahrig (above) decided to use the flags as a patriotic photo backdrop this past weekend and thought the big display called for a big prop, in this case her 2,000-pound Clydesdale therapy horse, Jumping Jack or “JJ,” which she rode among the flags.

“It was a special moment for everyone,” said Club President  Stan Coloff. “Our club is happy and honored to display the flags for the heroes of our community.”

The display will return for Veterans Day. The club offers flag sponsorships as a fundraiser for its community projects. For information, visit www.middlesexflags.org.
