“We’re going down to the river, down to the river, down to the river to pray,” said a Zoar Baptist Church rep paraphrasing part of a song created by David Silverberg, Jordan Feliz and Colby Wedgeworth. Zoar Baptist Church begins its annual 8 a.m. “beach” worship on Sunday, May 28, and it will continue through Sept. 3. All in all, there will be 15 opportunities to worship near where the Rappahannock River meets the Chesapeake Bay at Stingray Point.

“Come experience a slice of heaven when the rays of the sun gently break through the pines under a clear blue sky, with white billowy clouds,” reads a Zoar news release. “You may even get to see dolphins breaking the surface of the water or sailboat mainsails catching the wind.”

Writers Silverberg, Feliz and Wedgeworth captured the experience when they wrote the song, performed by Jordan Feliz, titled, “We’re Going Down to the River to Pray.”

It goes:

“I know a place where we can go
To lay the troubles down eating your soul
I know a place where mercy flows
Take the stains make you whiter than snow
We’re going down to the river
Down to the river, down to the river to pray
Let’s get washed by the water
Washed by the water and rise up in amazing grace
Let’s go down, down, down to the river (you will leave changed)
Let’s go down, down, down to the river (never the same)”
You are invited to join Zoar Baptist Church congregants at their “beach” worship. Take General Puller Highway (Route 33) east through Deltaville toward Stingray Point and turn onto Speck Avenue where the special outdoor worship area is located. You can tune your FM car radio to 100.7 or, perhaps a better choice, bring your lawn chair and sit under the pines. “Come on down to the river to pray,”

“See you there!”
