Saluda Juneteenth details announced

and Larry Chowning –

Juneteenth 2023 will “celebrate freedom” on Saturday, June 10, with a parade and festival at Middlesex High School (MHS) in Saluda.

The family event is open to the public and will be educating, empowering and entertaining, organizers say.

Parade

The parade will line up at MHS at 11 a.m and at noon will proceed to the Middlesex County Historic Courthouse, circle around it and go back to the high school. Participants should arrive early because the road will be closed to traffic before noon.

For information or to participate in the parade or festival, call Minister Davelin Gresham at 804-530-2791 or Cynthia Beverley at 804-815-8426.

About Juneteenth

On June 19, 1865 the enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned that the Civil War had ended and they had been freed nearly two years earlier by Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.

Since then, Juneteenth has been observed by many African-Americans as a second Independence Day commemorating the end of slavery.

In 2020, then-Virginia Governor Ralph Northam announced that Juneteenth would be a permanent state holiday and in June 2021 President Joe Biden made June 19 a federal holiday, proclaiming it as a day for all Americans to commemorate the end of slavery.
