MHS tennis standout, teammates expected to play in regional tournament today
Middlesex High School’s (MHS) girls tennis team closed out its regular season with an 8-1 loss to Rappahannock in away action and a 5-5 win-loss record.
Despite the team’s loss, No. 1 Charger girl player Madison “Maddie” Green won 7-5, 6-3 in what MHS Coach Matthew Short called her toughest and best match to date.
“When the two players met last, Green was off her game,” Coach Short said. “Her racket had just broken prior to the start of her match, which set in motion her loss in the match.
“It’s important to note that since she started playing tennis, Green’s singles matches win-loss record is 31 wins and only six losses. That’s only three seasons worth of matches due to her 2020 season being cancelled due to COVID-19 and the 2021 season being shortened to only six matches due to COVID-19 as well.
“Green was determined to not lose again to the Rappahannock player. We worked on weaknesses during practices so that when they met the second time Green was able to earn the victory. The match lasted over two hours and 15 minutes. In the first set Green was down 2-5. She came back to win that set 7-5.
“Green figured it out in the second set. She won the second set, 6-3, and won the match in two straight sets.”
Middlesex was scheduled to play in the regional team semifinals versus Mathews at Mathews High School on Thursday, May 18. Maddie Green, was scheduled to play in the regional individual singles tournament on May 24, and 9 a.m. today, Thursday, May 25.
The No. 1 MHS doubles team of Maddie Green and Meeha Ferris was scheduled to play in the regional individual doubles tournament also on May 24, and 9 a.m. today, Thursday, May 25.
