The Urbanna Town Marina was a busy place last week as the town’s waterfront was used as a platform to conduct several educational programs for school children.

Lowell School from Washington, D.C., a private prekindergarten through eighth grade school, brought a busload of students to Urbanna to participate in the Friends of the Rappahannock (FOTR) educational kayak tour of Urbanna Creek.

Christchurch School senior Abigail Smiley, as part of her senior honors project, worked with FOTR to sponsor two-days of field trips for St. Clare Walker Middle School sixth graders.

Dave Cola of FOTR said that Smiley was able to get every Middlesex County Public School sixth grader to take the canoe field trip on Urbanna Creek to help them learn and appreciate “our location in Tidewater Virginia.”

“The raw curiosity, excitement, smiles and energy (of the students) was incredible to witness and was a great testament to Abigail’s vision for wanting to make a real positive impact.”
