The Urbanna Town Council will consider amending its zoning ordinance to allow a limited number of apartment or condominium residences in the B-1 (Commercial) District. The amendment would allow up to six residences per lot.
Council will conduct a public hearing on the proposed amendment on Thursday, May 25, at 7 p.m. in the new Urbanna Town Hall at 390 Virginia St., Suite B.
Urbanna Zoning Administrator Roy Kime explained that under current zoning no new individual residential apartments or condominiums are allowed to be constructed in the B-1 zone unless the town council approves a Special Use Permit, and only then if the apartments or condominiums are associated with a permitted use in that district.
Also, the current zoning requires the residences to be related to “a permitted office, business or commercial use in the same building.” The proposed amendment would remove this restriction and make apartments or condominiums in the commercial district a permitted use “by right” and not require council’s approval…
