MC supervisors vote 3-2 against zoning request after citizens decry store proposed for east Saluda
A single vote matters.
Consider the recent application for a Special Exception to build a Family Dollar store on the east end of Saluda. The Middlesex Planning Commission was unanimous in recommending approval, so did Planning and Zoning Director Dave Kretz.
It wasn’t until it was considered by the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors that differences of opinions emerged.
In the end the Special Exception fell one vote short. The vote was 3-2 against granting a Special Exception to build the 10,500 square foot retail building. Voting against the proposed special exception application were Saluda District representative Don Harris, Hartfield District representative John Koontz, and Pinetop District representative Lud Kimbrough, who represents Deltaville.
In favor of granting the special exception were Jamaica District representative Wayne Jessie and Harmony Village District representative Reggie Williams.
A Special Exception was needed due to the size of the proposed Family Dollar store, which at 10,500 square feet is more than twice the size of the permitted building size of 5,000 square feet. The parcel is zoned Village Community.
