Charger girls subdue Mathews, West Point
The Middlesex High School (MHS) varsity Lady Charger softball team improved to 9-4 on the season and 5-1 in Tidewater District play after important wins last week against Mathews and West Point.
“This was a giant week for us in the district,” said MHS Assistant Coach Chucky Oliver. “After a hard fought emotional win against Mathews, it was critical for us to not let up against West Point. The girls stepped up to the challenge in both games.”
Middlesex 11, Mathews 10
Middlesex results include, Chelsey Holmes 3-5, three runs scored, two RBIs; Libby Oliver, 3-4, three runs scored; Candice Brown, four RBIs, 1-3, run scored; Courtney Jessie, 1-4, two RBIs; Courtney Harrow, 1-3, RBI; Aylssa Mitchem, 1-2, run scored, RBI; Kayleigh Moye, 2-3, double, two runs scored; and Carly Jessie, 1-4, run scored. Courtney Jessie started in the circle for Middlesex going three and two-thirds innings allowing four hits, one earned run and striking out two. Libby Oliver pitched the final three and a third innings allowing three hits, one earned run, two strikeouts, and picking up the win. A rematch is set for May 11 at Mathews.
Middlesex 9, West Point 2
Middlesex results include, Chelsey Holmes 3-4, three runs scored, RBI; Libby Oliver, 2-4, double, run scored, three RBIs; Candice Brown, 1-3, run scored, RBI; Courtney Jessie, 1-3, run scored, RBI; Courtney Harrow 1-4, RBI; Alyssa Mitchem, 3-3, double; Kayleigh Moye, 1-3; Carly Jessie, 0-2, walk, run scored; and Cheyenne Musick, 1-3, double, run scored. Courtney Jessie pitched all seven innings for the Chargers allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out four.
Middlesex visited Charles City on Tuesday and will travel to King William for a 6 p.m. game today, Thursday, May 4.
