Christchurch girls sailing team excels

Christchurch School girls sailing team members won the school’s first girls state championship in school history last month.

Maddie Janzen ‘25, daughter of Erich and Kelly Janzen of Atlanta, and Maria del Rosario De Tomas Perello ‘23, daughter of Javier De Tomas Y Miguel and Rosario Perello Marin of Valencia, Spain, won the 11th annual Virginia Interscholastic Sailing Association (VISA) Girls State Fleet Racing Championship at Youth Sailing Virginia in Hampton Roads.

Simone Moss ‘25, daughter of Stacy Moss of Oakland Park, Fla., and Alders Kulynych-Irvin ‘25, daughter of Doug Irvin and Jennifer Kulynych of Annapolis, Md., came in seventh place. Through nine races, Maddie and Rosario built a 17-point lead against the field of 18 teams from nine other schools. The girls now advance to the Mid-Atlantic Interscholastic Sailing Association (MAISA) Girls Championship May 6-7.
