A pricier pool gets town OK

Urbanna is contracting for a competition size pool with six lanes and 25 yards in length. A shallow area for children has been added (above at right). The new price is $1,169,000 — a 5% increase. The cost has been reduced by proposing a smaller bathhouse, with year around restrooms. (Graphic courtesy of Urbanna Pool Committee)

Council approves, 5-2, increase of $69,000 in Urbanna pool project

The proposed Urbanna community swimming pool went through another debate at the town council’s April 27 meeting. Council ultimately voted 5-2 to raise the pool contract price by $69,000, bringing the total to $1,169,000 — a 5% increase. The contract was submitted April 21 by Heisler Contracting of Richmond.

Voting in favor of the price increase were Mayor Bill Goldsmith and councilors Marjorie Austin, Beth Justice, Larry Chowning and Merri Hanson. Voting against were Sandy Sturgill and Alana Courtney.

Courtney said, “I’m extremely concerned about Heisler, the contractor , and the 18 clarifications that we do not include which could reach at least another couple hundred thousand dollars if not more” to the cost. “I can’t stand behind something when there are so many clarifications that are not included in this (contract) that we are going to need.”

Courtney suggested delaying the contract signing. Sturgill agreed adding that local contractors should be used.

Mayor Goldsmith commented the pool project has been pared down to reduce costs…
