The Middlesex High School (MHS) Lady Charger varsity softball team split a pair of Tidewater District home games last week, losing to King William, but defeating King and Queen Central.

The Lady Chargers softball team was handed its first district loss of the season on April 18, falling to visiting King William Cavaliers 22-4.

The Lady Cavaliers would pick up an unearned run in the top half of the first inning.

Middlesex would answer back in the bottom half when Chelsey Holmes drew a leadoff walk to start the inning, stole second base and would then be knocked in on an RBI single by Courtney Jessie. Errors would plague the Lady Chargers again in the second inning, allowing King William to plate four more unearned runs, taking a 5-1 lead.

Things started to unravel from there for the Lady Chargers, allowing seven more runs in the third inning.

King William put the game away in the fourth, scoring seven more runs, then three more in the fifth to earn the mercy rule win 22-4.

“Only six of their 22 runs we allowed in this game were earned,” said MHS Assistant Coach Chucky Oliver. “We made seven or eight physical errors and several other mental ones.

You’re never going to beat a good team like that. The one bright spot I will take away from this is we did score four runs off a pitcher that had only allowed two runs total this season.”
