“The Great Middlesex Green Up” is set for Earth Day 2023 on Saturday, April 22, with the goal of picking up trash on Old Virginia Street (Route 602) from the Urbanna Town Hall to U.S. Route 17, said organizer Tom Maffey.
The event is sponsored by Keep Middlesex Beautiful, VDOT and Middlesex County. About 40 volunteers are needed to pick up trash and six pickup trucks and drivers to assist are needed. Volunteers may email Alice Maffey at alice.maffey@gmail.com.
The plan is to have five-person teams that will pick up trash on both sides of a one mile section of the highway. A pick-up truck will be assigned to each team. Pickers should be able to walk two miles and bend over to pick up trash or use a handheld picker, said a news release from Keep Middlesex Beautiful.
