The Middlesex High School (MHS) varsity Lady Charger softball team faced some tough teams last week.

The Rappahannock Lady Raiders remain undefeated with a 16-1 win at Middlesex on March 28.

The opponents held each other in check for the first two innings before the Lady Raiders broke it open, plated five runs in the third inning, one in the fourth, three in the sixth, and seven more in the top of the seventh.

With a 13-0 win over Northumberland, the Lady Chargers made it through the first round of the Wells Fargo Invitational Tournament held at Dream Fields in Lancaster on March 31 and April 1.

In the tournament semifinals, the Lady Chargers lost 6-4 to the undefeated Greenbriar Christian Academy of Chesapeake. The Lady Chargers threatened, but failed to get some timely hits.

“We had some very tough competition last week,” said MHS Assistant Softball Coach Chucky Oliver. “Rappahannock may well be the best team in the state, and Greenbriar is loaded with talent every year as well.

“We just needed one or two more timely hits in that game and the outcome is different. The girls have been fighting through some injuries and spring break is coming at the perfect time for them to heal up and be ready for district play the following week.”
