It’s difficult to say for what Greg Chambers is most remembered.
Since he and his wife Gayle Chambers moved to Middlesex County in 2010, he has immersed himself in volunteering. His dedication to the community earned him the Middlesex Rotary Club’s Pride of Middlesex Award for 2023.
Chambers, the 22nd recipient of the award, exemplifies the Rotary motto “Service Above Self.” (Chambers is the first recipient of the award since 2019 — its annual presentation was paused in 2020, 2021 and 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.)
“The first thing I want to emphasize is that you don’t need to know anything to lead a team,” Chambers told the audience at the Pride of Middlesex ceremony held at the Deltaville Maritime Museum on April 1. “To lead you just need to be willing to try, ask a lot of questions, and apologize.”
Chambers spent a good part of his acceptance speech thanking those who helped make community goals become reality.
“Anyone can do this,” he said. “You just need to try, ask questions, seek help, and be ready to fail and try again.”
Service
Chambers served as president of Middlesex County Habitat for Humanity for eight years. He served in multiple leadership roles at the Cryer Center and Hands Across Middlesex in Harmony Village over the past 10 years.
As a Middlesex County Kiwanis Club member, Chambers has volunteered with many club programs, including “Backpack Buddies,” and the Urbanna Oyster Festival.
Water system
Since summer 2014, Chambers has served on the Middlesex Water Authority (MWA), serving as chairman of the board until he recently handed the gavel to Jim Nagy. The MWA has installed 42 miles of waterlines from near Urbanna to Topping and Deltaville and serves 718 subscribers.
Speaking at the Pride of Middlesex ceremony Middlesex County Administrator Matt Walker told Chambers and the audience, “Greg, the love you have in your heart, the honesty you demonstrate, the experience you’ve gained over a lifetime of leadership, and your persistence and dedication to the success of the mission, is why we have 42 miles of waterlines deployed here in Middlesex County today. Thank you sir. Well done!”
