Detectives with the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) are investigating a shooting that occurred last week, reported Maj. M.E. Sampson of the MCSO.
According to Maj. Sampson, on Wednesday, March 22, about 4:39 p.m., the MCSO received a call for a gunshot victim at a residence on Pine Tree Drive in the Warner area, west of Urbanna. Deputies arrived on scene within minutes of the call along with Emergency Medical Service personnel.
Detectives arrived on scene and interviewed witnesses and persons at the residence and collected evidence. Detectives recovered at the scene a 9 mm pistol and a bullet that was on the floor of the shed where the shooting took place, said Maj. Sampson.
The victim, Gerald Kalmanek, 21, of Urbanna, sustained a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was airlifted by LIFE EVAC Helicopter about 5:20 p.m. to VCU Medical Center in Richmond.
As of Monday of this week, the victim remained in the trauma intensive care unit after undergoing surgery and was in stable condition.
No formal charges have been placed at this time and detectives continue to investigate the incident, said Maj. Sampson, who added that since the investigation is active he could not give further details.
